Pain is protective, not always precise
How much something hurts does not always match how much tissue is injured. Everyone knows someone with dramatic imaging and little pain, and someone else who is in a lot of pain from a minor strain. Sleep, stress, worry and previous experiences all influence the volume of the alarm.
This matters because fearing pain often leads to protecting the area too much, and too much rest can slow recovery more than the original injury would.
When pain lingers
Pain that persists beyond the expected healing time usually reflects a sensitive nervous system as much as an injured body part. The good news is that sensitivity responds to training: gradually graded activity, better sleep and steady routines rebuild tolerance over time.
When to get checked
Pain after significant trauma, pain that keeps worsening, pain with numbness, weakness or other systemic symptoms, and pain that stops you sleeping all deserve a professional assessment. When in doubt, ask; sorting a serious cause from a manageable one is exactly what we are here for.
Discuss pain with a physiotherapist
For ongoing pain or difficulty moving, a physiotherapy appointment is an opportunity to discuss your history, assess movement and plan the next steps. Seek medical care for urgent symptoms.
